Fuse installation
What is Fuse?
Fuse is our library of Mac tools for automating a very wide range of tasks in our workflows: from creating a jacket template, making up a flatplan, extracting the wordcount of a book, to checking our files are correctly set up for printing.
For more in-depth information about the individual tools within the Fuse suite, please look at the descriptions for these in Fuse Tools.
Installation
In-house staff will have Fuse automatically installed on their Mac. If you are a freelancer, or not based in the office, you will need to contact us at fuse@uk.dk.com to request it.
Once you have received the Fuse app, follow these instructions (please note that if you already had a previous version of Fuse installed on your Mac, the new version will override the old one):
- When you run Fuse you may receive a message saying that Fuse can’t be opened because it’s from an unidentified developer. In this case, navigate in Finder to the app, and then press Ctrl>Click on the app and then “Open”).
- Double click on the app to install Fuse. If you are asked for a password, type in: Fuse
- The Fuse icon should appear automatically in your menu bar on the right hand side of your screen.
- Start up Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop (only InDesign if you are an editor and don’t have the other applications installed).
- If you have multiple versions of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator installed on your Mac, please make sure you open the correct version, as specified by DK, and close any other versions before you move on to the next step.
- In the Fuse menu, click on Set up with PRH settings. (If you only have InDesign installed on your Mac, you will get a message saying that Photoshop and Illustrator settings could not be installed. You can ignore that message).
- You will receive a pop-up asking for permission to control Adobe InDesign, please always click OK regardless of which InDesign version is shown as the permission applies to all versions.
NB: When running each Fuse tool for the first time, you will receive pop-ups beginning “applet wants access to control InDesign/Photoshop/Finder”. It is very important that you always click OK for these. Once you do, the Fuse tools should run as normal. There may be several approval notifications for some tools and some might come at the end so for tools like Exporter and SourceReport you may want to run on a single file so you catch all the notifications.
- After a few minutes you will receive a feedback message saying the apps have been configured.
- Once the script has finished installing all the necessary settings, make sure your InDesign Preferences are set up as per the ones on this link: https://www.dkhandbook.com/?p=
321 - If you are working on a coated book, you should not have to do anything as the script will already have set up all your Adobe applications to the correct Penguin_Colour_Settings_
Coated39. If however, you are working on an uncoated book, you will need to change the InDesign colour settings to Penguin_Colour_Settings_ Uncoated47 (and only InDesign, do not change anything in the other Adobe applications), To check your colour settings in InDesign, go to Edit > Colour Settings and ensure you have the correct one installed. - As we regularly push out Fuse updates, if you want to ensure that Fuse automatically updates to the latest version, go to Preferences > Update within the Fuse menu and click on Automatically install updates.
- To ensure that Fuse automatically launches every time you start up your Mac, do the following:
• Go to System Preferences
• Select Users & Groups
• Click on Login Items
• Click the + symbol
• Go to Users > Shared >FUSE
• Select the Fuse.app
• Click Add
Please note that Fuse and its associated tools are intended only for DK projects and will only work on Apple Macs and with Adobe Creative Suite 2024 Previous or later versions are not supported.
If you have any questions or problems with the above process contact fuse@uk.dk.com

To make it easier for us to check duplicate issues, manage workloads and priorities, please use this naming convention for the subject heading:
Priority rating – Name of Script – Brief description of the issue
e.g.: Priority 2 – SourceReport – timing out if selecting checks
Please choose your priority rating from this list:
Priority 1 – Critical, we must drop everything to resolve the issue right now as people can’t work.
Priority 2 – Needs to be fixed for the next release.
Priority 3 – Need to have, but doesn’t need to be in the next release.
Priority 4 – Nice to have if there is free time to do it.
In order to be able to deal with your issue as quickly as possible, please also provide us with:
- The files that you were working on when the issue occurred. We will need these to be able recreate the issue and to test any corrected code. If they are large files, please put these on MacTransfer, or get in touch to agree how to transfer the files to us.
- Details of what OS (operating system) version you are using
- Details of what actions led up to the error occurring
- Any screen shots that will help show the problem
- Details of how serious the problem is for you and what priority level you think the issue should be
